WiH Needs You! Looking for walk leaders.
This offshoot of The Walks into History Group came together in 2016 after a conversation between two members about travel writing and walking books. Both had a love of travel and reading, so felt that it could be fun to form a book group where like minded members could come together to discuss travel writing, both old and new……we have never looked back!
To make it even more of an occasion, we had our inaugural meeting over afternoon tea - now a well established tradition! We drew up a long list of writers and books from those initial 8 members, decided to meet just three times a year and to take on two books at a time - something old and something new! This proved to be a most interesting contrast and we have read of the most amazing journeys from the 1800’s and 1900’s, plus the more contemporary expeditions.
All the books are stimulating and there is something to be learnt from each and every one. We have tackled authors such as Robert Louis Stevenson, Isabella Bird, Laurie Lee, Freya Stark, Eric Newby and Nan Shepherd through to Robert Macfarlane, Melissa Harrison, Simon Armitage, Robyn Davidson, John Hillaby and Clare Balding; all have provoked excellent afternoons of discussion and introduced us to authors that we would not necessarily read by ourselves.
We currently have 10 members and should you wish to have more details about the group then do email nickandsallyb@gmail.com
